Subjective and Physiological Responses to Alcohol in Healthy Social Drinkers: Moderating Effect of Variation in GABRA2
Clinical Trial ( IRB ) #: 06-162S-1
Title: Subjective and Physiological Responses to Alcohol in Healthy Social Drinkers: Moderating Effect of Variation in GABRA2
Principal Investigator: Dr. Jonathan Covault
Description: This study is designed to define the role of GABRA2 gene variation, which has been shown to influence risk of alcohol dependence, on the acute effects of alcohol in up to 50 social drinkers (with enrollment continuing until 30 subjects complete all laboratory sessions). Subjects will participate in 3 Laboratory session in a within-subject s design in which no alcohol, a low dose of alcohol will be administered to them on three separate occasions and in a random order. The identification of specific genetic determinants of variztion in the quality or magnitude of responses to alcohol may help to understand why some individuals are vulnerable to, or protected from, alcohol dependence.
